    Nel 1972 venne fatta a Riace una scoperta eccezzionale. Un subaqueo professionista scorse, a 300 m alla riva e a 8 metri di profondità, una mano di bronzo venire fuori dal fondale sabioso. Avvertite le autorità competente, le ricerche fecero emergere due bellissime statue greche, sicuramente destinate ad un ricco patrisio romano.
    Forse un tentativo di recoupero ci fu, ma il bronzo, pesante, non permise il loro salvattaggio. Per due millenni dunque, i due grandi e belli guerrieri ellenici, rimase sepolti nel fondale del mare calabrese.
