    I modi di dire “odore di santità” e “odore di zolfo”, fanno parte della traduzione popolare cristiana, ma no solo. Metaforicamente, li troviamo anche nel linguagio comune e non c ' è da stupirsi se si tratta di concetti di grande successo, anche se, oggi, vengano utilizzati in contesti assai lontano da quelli religiosi.

    Per segnalare il pericolo di un ingagno, non diciamo forse “qui c ' è odore di zolfo”? E per définire una persona ineccepible, non diciamo che la persona sia “in odore di santità”?

    In definitiva, queste metafore sull ' olfatto per svelare la natura spirituale di un essere, ci avvicinano all ' animale, fermi restando che gli animali hanno l ' olfatto molto più sviluppato di noi umani.
